My daughter is interested in acquiring a graphics tablet to enhance her
ability to produce artwork via the computer. Not having any talent or
knowledge in this area myself I was hoping that I could turn to the net
for some help. Does anyone have advise in terms of manufacturer, model,
size, resolution, etc. with respect to graphics tablets. The tablets I
have seen in the store are about 4x6 which seem too small to me to use
effectively, but I may be wrong.

As a side question, given a tablet what are some of drawing applications
which work best with them?

Any help is appreciated.

cheers,

Painter and Photoshop are the applications I use with my tablet. Painter is
more "transparent" to and artist, its easier and more intuitive, basically
it imitates Art materials, watercolour, charcoal, inks etc etc. Photoshop is
the graphic world's standard.

You won't need the most uptodate versions of the programmes and you can pick
up the earlier versions very cheaply, and I do mean very cheaply, have a
look around the net.

As for tablets, I use the small tablet for all my work, I have a bigger
tablet that just's sits in my drawer. Buy your daughter the cheap hobby
version of the tablet, it's more than adequate. Its less sensitive to
pressure but you won't notice. I got caught away from home without my tablet
last month. A client phoned and needed a job very quickly, I went into a
major computer store and bought the cheapest Wacon tablet there ( a brand I
trust and recommend). I hardly noticed any difference.

Drawing at right angles to the screen will seem strange at first but your
daughter will pick it up in 10 to 15 minutes, you will prob take a little
longer lol.

Good luck
